Captain Phillips

I’m no movie expert but I love them and love talking about them!

We went to see Captain Phillips last week so I thought I’d write about what we thought.  Here’s a quick synopsis:

“The true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.”

From the moment it starts to the moment it ends it’s very intense and you’re on the edge of your seat.  You quickly get an idea of the type of man Captain Phillips is (played by the ever reliable Tom Hanks) and the story line moves pretty quickly.  I really liked the way they showed the point of view of the Somalians as well as the Americans so you could see their desperation and some of the reasoning for their choices.

I can normally sit quite comfortably and eat my snacks during a movie, but with this one I didn’t reach over for my peanut M&M’s once!  I was sucked in right away and could barely breathe until it finished.  The only complaint is that it is a little bit too long at 134 minutes (about 2.3 hours).
It was scary and suspenseful and Tom Hanks performance was brilliant, especially in the last 10 minutes of the film (which everyone seems to be talking about, but trust me, it is emotional!).  The Somalian actors were also really good.  Not a very in depth review but overall we were really impressed with this movie and would definitely recommend it!

I’d give this one 4 cups of tea out of 5!
